All the time, she'd look up at the sky (they lived under the airport) and just get lost in daydreams. So when she got of age, rather than getting a shitty retail job, she sucked up a little ambition, took the ASVAB, and barely squeaked her way into the Navy. The Navy would've been great for her if she had any real sense of discipline. But she didn't, and she didn't learn. She made it through basic, through one tour, but then she was out, quietly discharged and sent on her way. Washing out wasn't in the plan, so she didn't have any other plans - she borrowed money from her parents and took piloting lessons, and tried her hand at a few commercial jobs - mostly cropdusting, hauling short-distance cargo. She didn't even have the discipline for that - flight plans, pfeh - and eventually she found herself back in the old neighborhood, with a job at a pawn shop. Saul -- the owner of the shop -- was an old friend of the family, and he gave her the job first as a favor to her mother, and then kept her on because she was good at it. She didn't need security - she could throw a hell of a punch on her own. She took no shit from anyone. She knew what things were worth. She'd work with the cops as necessary - especially her cousin - and ask them to leave just as frequently. She doesn't know it, but over the years she's worked in the shop, Saul's come to really like and respect her. And though he won't give her a raise (though he does give her bonuses at the oddest times and let her live above the shop rent-free) he will be leaving her the shop when he retires, and giving it to her outright when he dies. All she knows is that Thursday's poker, Friday's carousing, the shop opens at seven without fail and closes at nine. And every dollar in the box under her bed is another dollar towards owning her own plane.
